Invention is the foundation of Greubel Forsey. Since its creation, the Atelier has filed over 70 patents and developed ten Fundamental Inventions, each conceived to bring concrete progress to mechanical watchmaking. Innovation is never pursued for its own sake, but to improve chronometric performance, mechanical efficiency, or expressive possibilities. This approach is visible in creations such as the Tourbillon Cardan, with its three-cage construction and gimbal-like motion, and the Nano Foudroyante, which integrates a patented nano-mechanism combining flying seconds, tourbillon and manual-wind flyback functions within a compact 37.9 mm format. Each invention becomes a foundation for future developments across the collection.

Hand Finishing & Hand Watchmaking

Every Greubel Forsey timepiece is finished by hand, requiring hundreds of hours of manual work per timepiece. Hand-polished bevels, black-polished steel surfaces and traditional surface treatments are executed to ensure both visual refinement and long-term integrity. Beyond finishing, the Atelier preserves traditional hand watchmaking through the Hand Made workshop, where all components are built using only hand-operated tools. The Hand Made 2, built at three pieces per year, embodies this philosophy through an architecture that demands exceptional manual expertise at every stage.

Architecture as Design

At Greubel Forsey, the movement is the design. Form and function are conceived together, creating a three-dimensional architecture where technical solutions shape aesthetics. The Convexe approach to case shapes illustrates this philosophy through the coherence between case curvature and movement structure, while the GMT demonstrates how a layered three-dimensional architecture can integrate multiple indications while preserving clarity, depth and visual balance. Each movement is distinct yet contributes to a unified architectural language.

Performance & Reliability

Mechanical excellence must be supported by measurable performance. Greubel Forsey timepieces are engineered to achieve daily rates within less than a second, reflecting extensive work on regulating systems and stability. Reliability is equally essential, with complex mechanisms designed for long-term durability and, in certain cases, reinforced by dedicated security functions.

Exclusivity &
Rarity

Exclusivity results from deliberate choices in production and lifecycle management. Volumes remain low, and each caliber follows a defined lifecycle designed to preserve rarity over time. Movements are progressively discontinued so that each creation remains a distinct chapter within the collection. Projects such as the Hand Made series, built in extremely limited quantities, illustrate this long-term approach, where rarity is the natural consequence of complexity and craftsmanship rather than artificial limitation.
